Tupilaq
The tupilaq is a constructed monster of Greenlandic tradition, stitched together from animal remains and human child corpses and animated to carry out a murder. It has no purpose but its maker's revenge and it will destroy him if it fails. Although it is assembled rather than raised whole, it belongs with the sorcerer-controlled dead of other cultures. Its nearest literary cousin is Frankenstein's creature.1
- a victim with stronger magic can turn it back on its maker
- the maker can save himself by public confession
Эх сурвалж юу гэж байна
The maker wore his parka back to front with the hood over his face1
The ritual involved sexual contact with the bones and chanting that could last for days1
None survive, since they were made of perishable materials1
Among other Inuit groups the word could mean an invisible ghost or a chimera only shamans could see1
The carved tupilak figures sold today began as models made to show curious Europeans what one looked like1
Чи түүнээс зугтаж чадах уу?
