Carrefour is the silent zombie who guards the crossroads in Val Lewton and Jacques Tourneur's film. The film leaves open whether its zombies are the work of a houngan or of illness. Stylus Magazine ranked it the fifth-best zombie film of all time, and scholars read Carrefour as an image tied to slavery.1

Carrefour's origin is never given; the film's other zombie, Jessica, is explained either by a fever that damaged her spinal cord or by a houngan's work.
